Dan huwa gvern ostili lejn il-ġurnaliżmu

Awturi jinnota li l-Gvern jidher li ser jgħin l-għedewwa tal-ġurnaliżmu ħieles u l-ġurnaliżmu investigattiv, billi jopponi proviżjonijiet kontra SLAPP bħala parti mill-Liġi fuq il-Midja u d-Difamazzjoni.

Mingħajr il-miżuri kontra SLAPP, li huma essenzjali għall-protezzjoni tal-ġurnaliżmu f’dan il-pajjiż, l-Abbozz il-ġdid lanqas jiswa mqar il-karta fejn jinsab miktub. L-Abozz mingħajr dal-miżuri ma jipproteġix lil Maltin attakkati minn interessi partikolari, per eżempju Henley and Partners u Pilatus Bank. Mingħajr dal-miżuri, l-Abozz huwa eżerċizzju fil-PR mingħajr sustanza.

Kuntrarju għal spin li jingħad minn xi wħud, l-ispirtu u l-liġi tal-Unjoni Ewropea jirriflettu l-bżonn għal miżuri kontra SLAPP. Li jitneħħew dal-miżuri huwa affront u insult għas-sħubija ta’ Malta fl-UE.

Awturi jistieden il-membri kollha fil-Kamra tar-Rappreżentanti biex jivvutaw favur miżuri kontra SLAPP. Dan għandu jsir b’mod trasparenti, kuntrarju ta’ kif sar id-dibattu fil-Kumitat tal-Kunsiderazzjoni tal-Abbozzi, meta l-mikrofonji ġew mitfija, u d-dibattu ma setax jiġi segwit. Li tagħti appoġġ għal dawn il-miżuri juri l-valuri tat-trasparenza, onestà u rispett għall-ġurnaliżmu u għad-dritt taċ-ċittadin Malti li jkun infurmat. Li topponi dawn il-miżuri tfisser li taħdem għal Malta iktar insulari, iktar vulnerabbli, u inqas infurmata.

This is a government hostile to journalism

Awturi notes that the Government seems likely to stand with the opponents of the free press and journalistic inquiry, by vetoing anti-SLAPP provisions as part of a new Media and Defamation Law.

Without the anti-SLAPP provisions, which are essential to protecting Maltese journalism, the new Bill is not worth the paper it is printed on. It does not protect Maltese journalists harassed by corporate entities, for example by Henley and Partners and Pilatus Bank. Without the provisions, the Bill is a PR excercise without substance.

Contrary to spin, the anti-SLAPP provisions are established in the spirit and text of current European Union Law. Removing these measures is an affront and insult to Malta’s EU membership.

Awturi calls on all members of Parliament from all parties to support anti-SLAPP provisions. This should be done in a transparent manner, contrary to the debate that took place in the Consideration of Bills Committee, during which the microphones were switched off such that the debate could no longer be followed. To support the provisions is to demonstrate the values of transparency, honesty and respect for the press and Maltese citizens. To oppose them is to work for a Malta that is more insular, more vulnerable, and less informed.
